The famous documentary by Jennie Livingston captures the New York ballroom scene of the late 1980s as a celebration of dance, performance, identity, and community. The filmmaker focuses primarily on the African American and Latino queer communities with which the ballroom subculture is most strongly associated, while not shying away from naming the harsh realities they face — including homophobia, racism, violence, poverty, and the growing AIDS crisis.
