With anthropologist Associate Professor Helena Tužinská and philosopher Professor Anton Vydra, we will explore the meanings and transformations of intimacy across generations. Together, we will look at intimacy as a profound cultural and existential phenomenon that encompasses both our physical embodiment and our relationship with the spaces we inhabit.

The idea of home as a place of intimacy and safety may represent a space of memories for older generations, while for younger people it can also take the form of a digital space through which they stay connected with those closest to them. Our bodies are the primary medium through which we experience the world, our own vulnerability, and express our inner selves. The worlds of children and older adults are often more physically limited and fragile, making them more dependent on their surroundings and loved ones, and giving rise to unique forms of intimacy.

At the same time, intimacy is something that is culturally shared within communities, societies, and nations through symbols, rituals, and even collective traumas. It has many faces and deeper meanings that are worth understanding—or at least attempting to understand. As the inscription at the Delphic oracle reminds us: Gnothi Seauton – Know Thyself.
